In chapter 8, Carraway goes to visit Gatsby after Mytrle's death. The two talk about how Gatsby has been waiting for Daisy that night about his previous affair with her. He confesses that he loved her for her wealth and beauty and popularity. The two planned to marrying, but after Gatsby left for Oxford, Daisy was to marry Tom.
In chapter 9, Carraway attempts to arrange Gatsby's funeral. However, he is having trouble doing so. The people who attended his party, etc are no where to be seen anymore. Showing that Gatsby didn't truly mean anything to him. Rumors about Gatsby still swirled around after his death. At Gatsby funeral, his father shows up. His father is very proud of him. Then Carraway decides to move back Midwest because he is sick of everyone and their actions.
This posed Gatsby in a situation that if he were to continue to chase Daisy, he would look like a fool and imposture. Instead he wrote to her saying he would just stay at Oxford, but as time went on, Daisy married Tom and it was too late for Gatsby. This makes Carraway sad, as he feels for Gatsby. Meanwhile, Myrtle's husband goes into spiral at the loss of his wife. He sets out to end Gatsby's life, for he believe Gatsby was the one who killed his wife.
